Challenges and applications of carbon fiber structural reinforcement


1. Carbon fiber structural reinforcement system is a very innovative system

The characteristic of many aged concrete structures is that they no longer provide sufficient load-bearing capacity and therefore need to be strengthened. However, carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CRFP) can be used at low cost to reinforce components that are insufficiently reinforced, corroded, or damaged. By using CFRP sheets bonded on the surface, the bending strength can be improved immediately. The pillars of low-quality concrete can be completely wrapped with carbon fiber to enhance its multi-axial strength and increase its load-bearing capacity to twice its original value.


2. Construction lacks space? CFRP system can solve the problem

Standard reinforcement measures using steel beams or steel embedded in shotcrete can quickly reduce the height of transparent parts by 10 to 15 cm. However, the thickness of the surface-bonded CFRP sheet (including adhesive) is less than 0.5 cm. Moreover, by molding CFRP sheets into the gaps of concrete, the clear height is not affected at all. For structures such as railways and highway bridges, ceilings and roof beams in multi-storey car parks, it may be necessary to retain the previous dimensions or only make smaller reductions. The use of carbon fiber reinforced systems does not even require removal of pipes and ducts installed along the surface.


3. Carbon fiber structural reinforcement system can effectively close the crack

Cracks in reinforced concrete members are common. Products that exhibit large width variations can sometimes not be repaired by traditional injection methods to achieve structural reinforcement. Cracks may also reopen or occur in other locations. CFRP sheet is a feasible solution to limit the variation of crack width. They ensure that large cracks are converted into smaller cracks, which can be easily covered using appropriate surface protection systems.
